Comparative Litigation Costs

The US Chamber Institute for Legal Reform (ILR) published a study this summer that compared “2011 Liability Costs as a Fraction of GDP” among the US, Canada and Europe: http://www.instituteforlegalreform.com/doc/international-comparisons-of-litigation-costs-europe-the-united-states-and-canada.

It will surprise no one that the US led at 1.66 per cent, but it may be surprising that Canada came second at 1.19 per cent, ahead of the UK at 1.05 per cent. The other European countries all followed. From a competitiveness point of view this was not a contest that a country aspires to win a gold, silver or bronze medal.
