Lexpert survey for law students released, rates firms based on associate feedback

Lexpert has just released the results of its annual Law Student and Associate Recruitment Guide.

Click here to see how associates have rated their firms on a number of criteria, including hours, quality of work, pro bono, mentoring, culture and administration. Associates  (and some new partners) were asked to rate their firm numerically for a number of questions within each category and also given the opportunity to give written comments about their firms (which we call “The Buzz”).

The feedback given to us by associates and junior partners offers candid viewpoints of their firms and their legal career experience thus far. We compiled responses from 4941 associates and junior partners from the leading 178 business-oriented law firms in Canada.

The Survey was sent to associates and junior partners in their first to ninth year of practice. Questions were carefully chosen to provide information relevant to law students and facilitate the decisions law students will make. Participation by law firms was solicited in the winter of 2012, and the Survey took place during the late spring. The Survey is done anonymously; therefore, we publish results only from firms where the number of results is sufficient to preclude self-identifying information.

Survey questions asked for a response on a scale of percentages and the published results for each question, or group of questions, are shown as weighted averages of the responses. An average is then calculated for each category of questions. The Buzz comments come directly from individual lawyers and are edited for typographical errors only.

From the comments received, we selected for publication those that were most representative. In this regard, our underlying goal is to provide informative, independent, third-party reviews. Again, we avoided any comments that would self-identify a Survey-taker.

This year our Survey is again published with the support of Pro Bono Students Canada (PBSC), the only national law student program in Canada. PBSC is endorsing the Survey’s pro bono questions, and will be promoting the 2012 Student Guide through the chapters it operates at the 21 law schools in Canada.

We hope our Survey results and the additional content in the 2012 Student Guide is of assistance to you in your future career choices.
