Sheppard Mullin in the Windy City

The Chicago financial district (Mike Liu)

The demise of Dewey & LeBoeuf gave pause to those talking law firm mergers, consolidation and/or expansion in Canada and around the world. Perhaps the AmLaw Daily despatch that Sheppard Mullin has launched its 15th office, in Chicago, will re-start expansionary visioning.

Lawyers in the new office are joining from the Chicago office of K&L Gates, save Kevin M. Cloutier, who joins the firm from Winston & Strawn; and D. Ronald Ryland, the firm’s general counsel who is relocating from San Francisco.

It may interest Canadian lawyers to note that one joiner commented on Sheppard Mullin’s culture feeling a lot like a previous firm several of them had belonged to, Bell Boyd. How many times do memories of these former firms, where lawyers were younger and pursuing an entrepreneurial idea, partially inspire new firm launches (Donahue in Calgary, anyone?)
