Norton Rose Canada poised to lead in energy sector

With the official merger of Macleod Dixon and Norton Rose OR this week, the newly minted Norton Rose Canada now boasts a global group of more than 200 energy lawyers.

“Being a part of Norton Rose Group means we now have increased resources in the energy sector and coverage in more juristictions than ever,” says Chrysten Perry, partner in the Calgary office and chair of the firm’s Energy Law practice group.

One of these energy sector deals is featured in Lexpert’s January issue.

Perry led a team at Macleod Dixon that represented PETRONAS (the national oil and gas company of Malaysia) in its joint venture with Calgary-based natural gas producer Progress Energy.

The $1.07 billion deal involved an investment in shale gas assets in Western Canada along with a joint venture agreement to develop and potentially export the production in the form of liquified natural gas (LNG)  from the BC coast to eastern markets.

Although the legal resources used in that particular deal were almost exclusively Canadian, going forward, Perry and her team can also draw on the expertise of global Norton Rose partners, who have, “worked on some of the largest and most complicated LNG projects in the world,” she says.

Macleod Dixon had expanded for 20 years into emerging energy markets with offices in Colombia, Venezuela, Kazakhstan and Russia. But joining Norton Rose is its most historic step.

According to Bill Tuer, former Macleod Dixon managing partner and now integration partner at Norton Rose Canada: “This isn’t our first international rodeo, but it’s our biggest.”
